Water Supply Cut to Kaneshie, Dansoman, Chorkor, Other Communities After Major Pipeline Damage
Residents in several parts of western Accra are facing temporary water supply disruptions after excavation works on a major drainage project damaged transmission pipeline.

Water supply has been disrupted across several densely populated communities in western Accra after construction works damaged a major transmission pipeline along the Kaneshie-Hansonic corridor.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) confirmed on Friday, August 28, 2026, that a 500mm-diameter main pipeline was damaged during excavation works for the construction of underground storm drains between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.
The affected communities include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township and Chorkor, as well as surrounding areas.
According to Ghana Water, the pipeline was damaged during excavation works being undertaken by AWERCO Construction Limited.
The incident caused the major water line to burst, sending large volumes of water into the construction trench and making it difficult for engineers to immediately reach the damaged section.
Repair teams race to restore supply
Ghana Water says its engineers and technical teams have been deployed to the site and are working to restore normal supply.
However, the flooded excavation has complicated the repair operation.
Technical teams are currently dewatering the trench to gain access to the damaged pipeline, while preparatory work has already started at one end of the affected section.
Ghana Water has not yet announced a specific timeframe for completing the repairs and restoring normal supply to all affected communities.
The company apologised to customers for the disruption and said it would provide further updates on the progress of the repair works through its official communication channels.
Pipeline damaged amid major drainage works
The incident comes as significant road and drainage improvement works are being undertaken around the Darkuman-Hansonic Junction and Kaneshie First Light corridor.
Construction of a major underground storm drain at Hansonic Junction recently commenced as part of efforts to address years of flooding and drainage problems along the busy Dr Busia Highway.
The drainage intervention follows longstanding complaints from residents, businesses and motorists over flooding in the area.
Officials had previously acknowledged that construction in the corridor would require careful coordination because major utility infrastructure, including electricity cables and a Ghana Water pipeline, runs through the project area.
Rehabilitation works also began on the deteriorated outer lane of the Darkuman-Hansonic Junction stretch on August 21, with the intervention extending from Atico Junction towards Kaneshie First Light.
More disruption expected along Kaneshie corridor
The pipeline incident comes days before another major phase of drainage construction is expected to significantly affect traffic around Kaneshie.
Under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, the government plans to begin construction of a new underground stormwater drainage system between Pamprom Junction and First Light Junction from September 7, 2026.
The project involves construction of a roughly 1.5-kilometre underground drain designed to improve stormwater management and tackle perennial flooding within the Kaneshie enclave.
As part of the construction, sections of the westbound Dr Busia Highway will be temporarily closed, with motorists travelling from areas including Korle Bu, Graphic Road, Obetsebi Lamptey Circle and Kwame Nkrumah Circle expected to use designated alternative routes.
For residents of Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman and Chorkor, however, the immediate concern is the restoration of water supply.
Ghana Water says its technical teams will continue working on the damaged pipeline and has appealed to affected customers for patience while repairs are carried out.
