Singer, songwriter and composer Dela Botri says he is developing a new musical approach aimed at reconnecting Ghana’s youth with the country’s traditional music by blending indigenous sounds with contemporary genres.
In an interview with Kafui Dey, the keeper of Ghanaian traditional music said he has spent the past six years studying the musical tastes of young people as part of efforts to create a sound that preserves Ghana’s musical heritage while remaining relevant to contemporary audiences.
“I want to focus more on the youth by blending the ethnic music I grew up in with modern music,” he said.
According to Dela Botri, young Ghanaians are increasingly drawn to genres such as Afrobeats, Dancehall and Azonto, making it necessary for traditional musicians to find ways of incorporating indigenous elements into these modern sounds.
He noted that some contemporary rhythms already bear similarities to traditional Ghanaian patterns, suggesting that the country’s musical heritage can be adapted rather than abandoned.
“I have been studying very carefully what the youth are loving,” he said.
Dela Botri said his response to this changing musical environment has been the development of a personal style he calls “Authentic AfroMusic”, which combines contemporary influences with traditional Ghanaian instruments including the calabash and xylophone.
He said the objective is to ensure that young people remain connected to the musical traditions inherited from previous generations.
“My idea is to reach the youth so they would know what we have and not leave them behind,” he stated.
Dela Botri said he has been working on the concept since 2020 and intends to continue developing it as part of his contribution to preserving and modernising Ghanaian music.
