Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy has revealed that his allegiance to Manchester United was determined by his family, saying he never had the opportunity to choose another club.

The Grammy-winning singer made the revelation in an interview with ESPN while discussing his connection with the English Premier League side.

Burna Boy said supporting Manchester United was a family tradition that left little room for personal choice.

“Well, to be fair, that’s a family thing. I had no choice in the matter, if we’re being honest. I didn’t get to pick,” he said.

The singer jokingly suggested that supporting another club could have consequences within his family.

“We don’t get those choices in my family. You have to be United or you find another family,” he said.

Asked about his favourite Manchester United player at the moment, Burna Boy named England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

The singer was also asked about his relationship with former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, with whom he has been pictured on several occasions.

Although Burna Boy said he had not seen Pogba recently, he described the former France international as a close friend.

“I haven’t seen him in a while still,” he said, adding: “That’s my guy, man, I love him.”

Burna Boy’s comments underscore his longstanding connection with Manchester United and the role of family tradition in shaping his support for the club.

His choice of Mainoo as his current favourite player also suggests that his interest in the club extends beyond its history and his family ties.
