Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has said it would be an honour if veteran forward Andre Ayew is recalled to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but stressed that such a decision should not be considered compulsory.

The debate over Ayew’s potential return has intensified in recent weeks, especially following his January transfer to Dutch side NAC Breda. The 36-year-old has featured in nine matches for the club, scoring once as they fight to remain in the Dutch top flight.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Agyemang-Badu said, “I don’t think it’s compulsory, but if the country wants to honour former footballers, I will support it. It’s a privilege.” He added that recognising players who have contributed significantly to the national team would be a meaningful gesture.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance. They have been drawn in Group L and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23. The group stage will conclude with a match against Croatia on June 27.

As part of their preparations in North America, Ghana will hold a training camp in March with friendly matches against Austria and Germany. Additional warm-up games against Mexico in May and Wales on June 2 are also planned.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, Ghana will be hoping for a stronger performance in 2026. Head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce the final squad for the tournament on June 1.
