Spotify has launched the ability for users in the United States and United Kingdom to purchase physical books directly through its app, marking a new expansion into the book retail space.
The feature, which began rolling out this week, allows users to buy physical books linked to audiobook pages within the Spotify app.
The service is powered through a partnership with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace that supports independent and local bookstores. Users who click the “Get a copy for your bookshelf” option are redirected to Bookshop.org, which handles pricing, stock and delivery.
The physical book purchase option is currently available on Android devices only, with iOS users expected to gain access next week.
The move positions Spotify as a growing competitor in the book retail market as it seeks to expand beyond music and podcasts into a broader audio and reading ecosystem.
It also forms part of the company’s wider strategy to improve profitability, alongside recent subscription price increases in the United States and Europe. Spotify recently reported 751 million monthly active listeners.
Alongside the book sales feature, Spotify has rolled out several updates initially announced in February, including an expanded “Page Match” tool now supporting more than 30 additional languages such as French, German and Swedish.
The feature allows users to scan pages of physical or digital books using a smartphone camera, which then directs them to corresponding audiobook sections. Spotify says users engaging with Page Match stream significantly more audiobook content compared to others.
The company has also introduced “Audiobook Recaps” on Android devices, offering short audio summaries to help users resume stories from where they left off.
In addition, Spotify has rolled out “Audiobook Charts” in Germany, similar to its music and podcast rankings, to highlight trending and popular titles and improve discovery for users.
