Kofi Kinaata won Best Highlife Artiste at the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards on Saturday, strengthening his standing as one of the leading modern voices of Ghana’s indigenous music genre.

The singer-songwriter, widely known for blending traditional highlife rhythms with socially conscious storytelling, also secured the Best Highlife Song award with “It Is Finished” during the ceremony held at the Grand Arena in Accra.

Kinaata beat competition from Fameye, King Paluta, Kwabena Kwabena and Kuami Eugene in a category often regarded as one of the most culturally significant at the annual awards.

Industry observers pointed to the emotional and national impact of “It Is Finished” as central to his success. The song, released following the 2025 military helicopter crash, paid tribute to victims of the tragedy while also honouring highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

The track gained widespread attention for its reflective lyrics and commentary on grief, resilience and national unity, themes that resonated strongly with audiences across Ghana.

Accepting the award, Kinaata thanked fans, his management team and veteran musicians who influenced his career, highlighting the role of traditional highlife in shaping his signature Fante-infused sound.

The latest victory adds to the Takoradi-born musician’s growing list of honours and reinforces his reputation for using music not only as entertainment, but also as a platform for social reflection.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards is Ghana’s biggest music awards platform, recognising achievements across highlife, gospel, Afrobeats, reggae, hip hop and other genres.
