Ama K Abebrese calls out “trend-chasing” TGMA red carpet looks

Ghanaian actress and media personality Ama K. Abebrese has ignited fresh debate on celebrity fashion after criticising some red carpet looks at the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

In a social media post shared on May 10, a day after the awards ceremony, Abebrese suggested that some celebrities deliberately choose controversial outfits to attract attention online.

“I think it’s safe to assume that a lot of people dress terribly on purpose to trend on the red carpet, because what is this?” she wrote.

Her remarks followed widespread online reactions to outfits worn at the event, held at the Accra International Conference Centre on May 9.

Ahead of the ceremony, organisers unveiled “A Touch of Glitter” as the official red carpet theme, encouraging bold, glamorous interpretations. While several attendees were praised for creativity and elegance, others became the subject of criticism and memes across social media platforms.

Others, however, pushed back, arguing that red carpet fashion is inherently performative and designed to spark conversation, even controversy.

The debate highlights growing scrutiny of celebrity image-making in Ghana’s entertainment industry, where social media trends increasingly shape public perception and visibility.

Critics say the pressure to “go viral” is influencing fashion choices, turning red carpets into platforms for attention-seeking rather than artistic expression. Supporters counter that fashion has always been subjective and experimental, particularly in entertainment spaces.

Despite the divided opinions, the TGMA red carpet once again proved to be a central feature of the awards night — generating buzz that continues to dominate conversations days after the event.
