Former Vice President and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has urged party lawmakers to strengthen coordination in Parliament and maintain a consistent strategy aimed at holding the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable.

Addressing NPP Members of Parliament on Wednesday (20 May), Bawumia said the party was building a strong internal “architecture” to support sector committees in order to act in a coordinated manner at all times.

He said the NPP must project itself as a government-in-waiting and consistently communicate that posture to the Ghanaian public.

“We must always project this posture that we are a party preparing to govern,” he said, according to remarks shared from the meeting.

Bawumia added that the party must remind citizens of what he described as its legacy policies, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, school feeding programme, and Free Senior High School policy.

He said these interventions demonstrated the NPP’s capacity to manage the economy and deliver social services.

He further urged lawmakers to take a more active oversight role by using parliamentary tools such as questions, statements and motions to scrutinise the government’s record.

“We must be critical in holding them to account,” he said, adding that accountability efforts should not depend solely on government business presented to Parliament.

The NPP flagbearer also accused the NDC of making promises while in opposition that should now be subjected to scrutiny.

He said the party’s parliamentary strategy must be persistent and focused on ensuring that the governing administration is consistently questioned on its commitments.
