The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to intensify diplomatic engagement and strengthen its management of reputational risks following the detention of Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, in the Netherlands over alleged financial crimes.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei who read a statement on behalf of the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told parliament that the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam had generated damaging international publicity for Ghana.

The caucus said the incident, first confirmed by parliament on May 12, required more than routine consular support and called for a stronger diplomatic response coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Speaker’s office.

“This arrest has inflicted deeply damaging international press on Ghana,” Appiagyei said, adding that “silence and routine will not suffice.”

The Minority called for senior diplomatic deployment, regular briefings to parliament, and a formal communication strategy to manage what it described as reputational fallout.

It said while legal and consular assistance was ongoing, the scale of international attention required a more proactive state response.

The minority also urged restraint in public commentary, stressing the principle of due process.

“No court has made any finding against our colleague. We will not try him in the court of public opinion.”

The Minority further called on political actors and the media to avoid prejudging the matter as investigations continue.
