Some aggrieved members and supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency of the Western Region staged a demonstration on Thursday (21 May) over what they described as irregularities and unfair treatment in the party’s ongoing internal electoral processes.

The protesters, made up of grassroots supporters, youth and party stakeholders, accused some constituency executives and officials supervising the process of manipulating internal elections and disregarding party guidelines.

In a statement signed by spokesperson Ampoful Adu Narkaah, the group said the problems began during the registration exercise and continued through nomination filing, vetting and polling station elections.

The demonstrators alleged that several party members had been subjected to “arbitrary disqualifications, intimidation, suppression, and exclusion” during the process.

They also claimed complaints and petitions submitted through the party’s internal structures had been ignored by both constituency and regional leadership.

“These developments have created widespread dissatisfaction, mistrust, division, and a growing sense of injustice among party faithful within the constituency,” the statement said.

The group argued that the electoral process had failed to meet standards of fairness, transparency and inclusiveness, thereby compromising the integrity of the exercise.

They said the protest was intended to defend democratic principles within the party rather than undermine its unity.

The demonstrators called on the NPP’s national leadership and National Elections Committee to intervene, including by conducting an independent investigation into the process and annulling results found to have breached party guidelines.

They also demanded fresh elections in affected areas under the supervision of the National Elections Committee, as well as equal treatment for all party members regardless of factional affiliations.

The protesters said they remained committed to the party’s unity and electoral prospects ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
