TheBank of Ghana (BoG) is advancing plans to deploy its digital currency, the e-cedi, for cross-border settlements and wholesale payments following the successful completion of a pilot phase.
Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama said the central bank is now focusing on how the digital sovereign currency can facilitate faster international transactions, support regional trade integration, and improve the efficiency of large-value payments within Ghana’s financial system.
The e-cedi project has progressed through design, implementation and pilot testing stages, with authorities assessing its feasibility before a full rollout.
Speaking at the ACI World Congress in Accra, Asiama said Ghana’s broader digital finance reforms and interoperable payment systems are positioning the country as a key player in shaping emerging financial markets.
“We are working with our partners across the region on harmonised payment systems and a broader vision of a connected African financial market,” he said, adding that payments initiated in one African city should clear seamlessly in another.
The ACI World Congress, hosted by ACI Ghana, has brought together financial market professionals, policymakers and industry leaders from more than 60 countries to discuss global financial trends and cooperation.
Officials say the development of the e-cedi reflects Ghana’s commitment to building modern financial infrastructure tailored to Africa’s economic realities, while strengthening collaboration across regional markets.
ACI Ghana President Lawrence Osilaja Boampong said the event highlights Africa’s growing role in global financial discourse, noting that increased collaboration could accelerate innovation and regulatory alignment across jurisdictions.
Chairman of ACI Financial Markets Association, Roy Daniels, also reiterated the organisation’s commitment to promoting professionalism and knowledge sharing among financial market participants worldwide.
