Actor Kwaku A. Sakyi says Ghana’s new Film Development Fund could significantly improve access to financing for filmmakers and expand the visibility of local productions both domestically and internationally.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (22 May), Sakyi said one of the industry’s biggest challenges has been limited funding, which often forces producers to scale down or compromise on production quality.

He described the new fund under the National Film Authorityas a “major step forward”, noting that it could increase the number of quality productions and open up opportunities for actors and crew.

“For actors, it means more productions, more roles, and better-quality films that can project Ghana’s image,” he said.

However, he argued that funding alone would not be enough unless stronger distribution and marketing systems are developed to reach wider audiences beyond existing consumers of Ghanaian content.

He said many quality Ghanaian films fail commercially not due to lack of quality but due to limited visibility and weak distribution strategies.

Sakyi also stressed the need for stronger marketing frameworks to ensure Ghanaian films reach audiences who are not already engaged with local content, adding that improved promotion could help shift public perception of the industry.

He expressed optimism that the fund, if well implemented, would help reposition Ghanaian cinema within the broader African and global film landscape.
