Nearly 30 percent of working Ghanaians are increasingly turning to gambling and betting to cope with daily expenses and debt obligations, despite signs of improving incomes, according to a new report.

The Old Mutual Financial Wellness Monitor highlights a mixed picture of cautious economic recovery alongside persistent financial vulnerability among households.

While 37 percent of respondents reported earning more than they did a year ago — up from 22 percent in 2023 — the study found that many remain financially exposed.

About 39 percent of respondents said they were worried about losing their income, while 53 percent indicated they would run out of funds within three months if their earnings stopped.

The findings suggest that although macroeconomic conditions and consumer confidence are improving, many households lack sufficient financial buffers to absorb economic shocks.

To cope with income instability, more Ghanaians are diversifying their earnings, with 27 percent now taking on additional jobs beyond their primary employment, up from 21 percent in 2024.

Young people are leading this trend, with 32 percent of those aged between 20 and 29 reporting multiple income streams, driven largely by limited job opportunities and rising financial pressures.

The report underscores the growing reliance on informal coping strategies — including betting — even as broader economic indicators show signs of recovery.
