A court has granted bail of 1 million cedis to a 26-year-old TikToker accused of issuing death threats against President John Dramani Mahama, authorities said on Friday (22 May).

The suspect, identified as Akosua Serwaa Minat, is facing charges linked to videos circulated on TikTok and other social media platforms, according to police.

Authorities say the recordings contained derogatory remarks directed at the president and statements perceived as threats to his life, including alleged calls for harm against Mahama and his wife, Lordina Mahama.

Police also confirmed that the accused was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following the viral spread of the videos.

She has been granted bail with two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant earning not less than GHC5,000 monthly, the court ordered. She is required to surrender her passport and Ghana Card and report regularly to investigators while the case is under investigation.

The arrest forms part of a broader crackdown by Ghanaian security agencies on the misuse of social media platforms for inciteful or threatening content, authorities said.

The case has triggered public discussion online over the boundaries of free expression and the legal limits of speech on digital platforms in Ghana.
