Parliament on Friday (29 May), passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025, commonly known as the anti-LGBT legislation, which seeks to criminalise same-sex relations and related activities.

The bill includes amendments that exempt individuals offering legal advice or representation to persons identified as LGBT from prosecution under the law.

It also provides protections for journalists and media organisations reporting on LGBT-related issues as part of their professional duties, as well as for medical, psychological and counselling professionals offering services to affected individuals.

The Minority Caucus opposed the amendments, arguing they suggest the earlier version of the bill, which was previously submitted for presidential assent, was flawed and required substantial revision.

The legislation now awaits the next steps in the approval process, which could include presidential consideration.

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo had previously been associated with delays in assent to earlier versions of the bill.

Parliament of Ghana passed the bill after extensive debate amid strong political divisions.
