More than 1,000 members and polling station executive aspirants of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Mampong Constituency of the Ashanti Region have threatened to boycott scheduled polling station elections on Sunday, citing unresolved petitions and alleged irregularities in the party’s internal electoral process.

The group says it has lost confidence in the elections after party authorities announced rerun polls in only 70 polling stations despite complaints affecting all 145 polling stations in the constituency.

Speaking to journalists in Mampong on Friday (29 May), spokesperson for the aggrieved members, Agyei Tufuor Ebenezer, said previous polling station elections were marred by the removal of names of eligible party members from the official register, leading to widespread disenfranchisement.

According to him, the group submitted three separate petitions to the Ashanti Regional leadership of the NPP but has yet to receive a ruling on the complaints.

“We are saying that if they are going by that 70 polling stations, then we are not going to be part of it,” he said.

The group is demanding an audit of the constituency register, restoration of all names allegedly removed from the voters’ list, and a determination on the pending petitions before any fresh elections are held.

Ebenezer alleged that the process was being manipulated to influence future internal party contests, including parliamentary primaries.

“If you are in politics and you allow yourself to be cheated at the polling station level, that is going to be the end of you because that is where we have the masses,” he said.

He noted that with 145 polling stations in the constituency, polling station executives play a significant role in shaping the party’s electoral structures and selecting parliamentary candidates.

Ebenezer further accused the constituency’s current Member of Parliament of seeking to influence the process, claiming that a level playing field would threaten the lawmaker’s political prospects.

“Our current MP has seen that if he gives us a level playing ground, he is not going to succeed, so he has found all ways and means to frustrate the process,” he alleged.

Asaase News could not immediately obtain a response from the MP regarding the allegations.

Although the group reaffirmed its loyalty to the NPP, Ebenezer warned that continued dissatisfaction could lead some members to reconsider their future within the party.

“It doesn’t mean I am no more an NPP, but if the need be, we will leave,” he said.

The dispute comes as the NPP continues efforts to reorganise its grassroots structures following its defeat in the 2024 general election, with polling station elections viewed as a key step in rebuilding the party ahead of future contests.
