The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has defended the decision to exclude Joseph Paintsil and Derrick Köhn from Ghana’s 28-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz left out the duo when he named his preliminary squad, a decision that has sparked debate among supporters and sections of the media.

Responding to the criticism, Asante Twum praised both players but stressed that competition for places remains intense, with only 26 slots available in the final squad.

“Joseph Paintsil is a good player and has given a good account of himself since his debut call-up,” he said.

“Derrick Köhn was also impressive against Germany, where he provided an assist, but only 26 players can make the final squad,” Asante Twum added.

Queiroz is expected to announce his final 26-man squad on June 1, before the team takes on Wales in a pre-tournament friendly on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Ghana, heading into their fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and concluding their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.
