Rapper Jay-Z returned to a headline performance on Saturday with a set at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, marking his first solo headlining show in more than five years.
The hip-hop icon delivered a 90-minute performance featuring more than 30 songs, alongside a lengthy freestyle that drew attention for its pointed lyrical references to several figures in the music industry.
The freestyle, performed without instrumental backing, was widely interpreted by fans and commentators as addressing fellow rapper Drake, with lines that appeared to challenge claims made in his recent music and raise issues around publishing rights and record deals.
Jay-Z also appeared to respond to remarks previously made by Ye concerning his family, defending his children during the performance. Despite the lyrical tensions, he still performed tracks from their collaborative album Watch the Throne.
Another section of the freestyle was also interpreted as a reference to Nicki Minaj, adding to online discussion following the performance.
The show comes weeks after Jay-Z suggested in an interview that rap feuds may no longer serve the genre positively, while acknowledging his own history of lyrical battles.
