The Federation of Ghana Medical Students’ Associations (FGMSA) has called for improved access to student loan support for medical and dental students across the country following a high-level engagement with the Chief Executive Officer of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), Dr Saajida Shiraz.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, formed part of FGMSA’s ongoing efforts to advocate better financial support systems for students pursuing medical education in Ghana.

During the engagement, FGMSA President Samuel A. Issifu highlighted the growing financial burden facing medical and dental students, especially those enrolled in Graduate Entry Medical Programmes (GEMP).

According to the association, the high tuition fees, extended years of study, and demanding clinical training requirements continue to place enormous pressure on students and their families.

FGMSA therefore appealed to the SLTF to consider reforms that would expand access to the Student Loan Plus Scheme and make it more responsive to the realities of medical education.

Responding to the concerns, Dr Saajida Shiraz reaffirmed the commitment of the Students Loan Trust Fund to supporting tertiary students through various financing initiatives under the government’s “No Fees Stress” policy direction.

She outlined ongoing interventions including the No Academic Fees Stress initiative for first-year students in public tertiary institutions, the Free Tertiary Education programme for Persons with Disabilities, and enhanced support systems under the Student Loan Plus Scheme. She acknowledged that some categories of medical students continue to face difficulties due to the high cost structure of their programmes.

The meeting ended with both parties agreeing to deepen collaboration to improve awareness and accessibility of student loan opportunities nationwide. As part of the agreement, the SLTF announced plans to establish Loan Clinics in medical schools during loan application periods to guide students through registration and application processes.

FGMSA welcomed the initiative and expressed optimism that continued engagement with the Fund would help address the financing challenges confronting medical students in Ghana.
