A suspect is expected to appear in court on 8 June over the alleged assault of a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema, an incident that has drawn strong condemnation from the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry on Friday said violence against health workers “will not be tolerated under any circumstances” following a viral video that allegedly shows a patient’s relative attacking the midwife on 2 June while she enforced visiting hours at the facility.

In a statement, the Ministry described the act as “unacceptable,” stressing that health facilities must remain safe spaces free from harassment and physical attacks.

“Violence not only endangers lives but also disrupts the delivery of critical healthcare services,” it said in a Facebook post.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has also dispatched a six-member delegation to visit the assaulted midwife and assure her of government support while investigations continue.

The Ministry said it remains committed to strengthening security at health facilities nationwide and expressed solidarity with the affected staff and colleagues at the polyclinic.

Health worker unions in Ghana have repeatedly raised concerns over increasing attacks on medical personnel, calling for stronger legal protections and stricter enforcement.
