Two people were killed and two others rescued after a three-storey building collapsed at Avenor, a suburb of Accra on Sunday (7 June), emergency officials said.

The building came down at Avenor in North Kaneshie at about 4:25 pm local time, triggering a major rescue operation involving the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies.

Rescue teams recovered two bodies from the rubble after hours of searching, while two survivors were pulled out alive and transported to Ridge Hospital for treatment.

Officials said search and rescue operations had been concluded and no additional victims were found beneath the debris.

Heavy machinery was deployed during the operation as emergency responders worked through the wreckage amid fears that more people could be trapped.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

Authorities said investigations would be launched to determine what led to the incident.

Building collapses have periodically raised concerns in Ghana, with experts often pointing to poor construction practices, weak enforcement of building regulations and structural defects as contributing factors.

Residents gathered near the scene as emergency personnel secured the area and monitored the aftermath of the collapse.
