Doctors and nurses at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have suspended an industrial action launched in protest against the suspension of the hospital’s chief executive, Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) said the strike was suspended at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday (9 June), following discussions with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, management and other stakeholders.

In a statement signed by KADA Chairman Dr. Michael Leat, the association said concerns about the impact of a prolonged strike on patient care and public health also informed its decision to halt the action and continue dialogue.

“The safety and well-being of patients and the broader public interest remain central to our responsibilities, and these have informed our decision to suspend the action and continue the dialogue,” the statement said.

The doctors had withdrawn emergency and outpatient services after the government suspended Dr Baidoo amid controversy over congestion and patient care challenges at the hospital.

KADA thanked Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, management and the Ghana Medical Association for their efforts toward resolving the dispute and pledged to continue engaging stakeholders on the issues that led to the industrial action.

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, located in Kumasi, is Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital and serves as the main referral facility for the Ashanti Region and northern parts of the country.
