Sports analyst Kwame Plahar has predicted a surge in red cards at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a dramatic opening match that saw multiple dismissals.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Plahar said the three red cards issued in the opening game signal a stricter enforcement of disciplinary rules by referees.
“This is a precursor of what we are going to see,” he said. “There will be a lot of stamping down on indiscipline.”
He argued that referees appear determined to assert authority early in the tournament, with decisions reflecting a zero-tolerance approach to dangerous play and misconduct.
Plahar reviewed the incidents and maintained that at least two of the red cards were justified, particularly those involving denial of clear goal-scoring opportunities and aggressive conduct.
However, he questioned one of the dismissals, describing it as harsh and more deserving of a yellow card.
Beyond officiating, he suggested the trend could influence how teams approach matches, especially those known for physical styles of play.
“A lot of teams will have to rethink their aggression because the referees are not going to tolerate it,” he said.
Plahar added that disciplinary control could become a defining theme of the tournament, potentially shaping outcomes as much as tactics and talent.
