Carlos Queiroz has rallied support for the Black Stars ahead of their World Cup opener, urging Ghana fans to create an intimidating atmosphere.

Ghana play a must-win fixture against Panama tonight at BMO Field in Toronto, with kickoff set for 23:00 GMT.

A positive result for Ghana will further their qualification hopes as they play England and Croatia in subsequent games.

Speaking at a press conference, the veteran tactician acknowledged the difficult task ahead, stressing that the team understands the high stakes of the upcoming game.

“We know where we are. We know the size of the mountain that we have in front of us that we have to climb,” Queiroz said.

However, the coach believes support from the Ghana fans inside the stadium will be integral to the ultimate success, calling on them to act as a vital extra player on the pitch.

“But in the stadium, to be honest with you, I expect better. I expect our fans to do even better because we need that. We need player number 12. We know that the fans from the other team will also be supporting.”

The coach concluded with a wish for the stands to drive the team forward, hoping the famous Ghanaian stadium culture would boost his players’ energy throughout the tie.

“But I hope that during the game, the drums of Ghana will be 90 minutes in our hearts to accelerate the players, for the beat of our hearts to help us beat our opponents.”

Ghana head into the tournament opener against Panama hoping to make a strong start and improve on their recent World Cup performances.

The four-time African champions are targeting a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa
