2026 WC: I am confident Ghana can shock England – Kurt Okraku

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has expressed confidence that the Black Stars can get a result against England as their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign gathers pace.

His comments come after Ghana opened their Group L campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama at the BMO Field on Wednesday night, a result sealed by a late strike from Caleb Yirenkyi.

The win puts the four-time African champions in a strong early position in the group, sitting second behind England, who began their tournament with a 4-2 win over Croatia.

With Ghana now set to face the Three Lions at Gillette Stadium on June 23, Okraku struck an optimistic tone, insisting the team will approach the match without fear.

“I’m not thinking too much about the game against England,” he told 3Sports.

“For me, Ghana against England is a derby like Ghana v Nigeria or Hearts of Oak v Kotoko.

“I’m positive about the outcome,” Mr Okraku added.

Ghana will conclude their group-stage matches against Croatia four days later, with the team aiming to build momentum as they chase a first knockout-stage appearance since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010.
