Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has revealed that the Black Stars are drawing extra motivation from the widespread scepticism surrounding their performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The centre-back made the remarks after Ghana held England to a hard-fought goalless draw on Tuesday in their second Group L fixture at the Boston Stadium.

Despite facing sustained pressure and conceding 19 goal attempts, the four-time African champions produced a disciplined defensive display to frustrate Thomas Tuchel’s side and secure a crucial point.

The result moves Ghana to four points, keeping the Black Stars firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage.

Arriving at the tournament as one of the lowest-ranked teams, Ghana have surprised many with an unbeaten start and a defensive record that remains intact, having yet to concede a goal.

Speaking after the match, Opoku dismissed criticism about the squad’s quality, insisting that external doubts have only strengthened the team’s determination.

“Ghanaians didn’t really think this team was that good, did they? Some people say this is the worst in history, to be honest with you,” he said.

“And so, me and the boys were talking about it.”

He added that the mindset within the squad is built on proving doubters wrong.

“Through my life, I’ve been an underdog, so there’s nothing unusual about being doubted. It’s been part of my journey. To prove people wrong gives me a buzz, and it does the same for the team.”

“Now we’re showing the fans and the world what we can do,” he concluded.

The draw leaves Ghana and England level on four points at the top of Group L heading into the final round of fixtures.

England will face Panama, while Ghana prepare for a decisive clash against Croatia as qualification for the knockout stage hangs in the balance.
