A major milestone has been recorded in Ghana’s cultural and linguistic preservation efforts with the official launch of the standardised orthographies of Kusaal, Likpakpaanl and Sisaali at the National Theatre in Accra.

The launch has paved way for the languages to be formally taught and assessed in schools.

The new writing systems are also expected to strengthen literacy development and support the integration of indigenous languages into digital platforms and emerging technologies.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, said it has become important to safeguard indigenous languages due to its essence in cultural identity and national development.

She noted that the initiative aligns with Ghana’s broader commitment in boosting mother-tongue education in the country as well as linguistic diversity.

“Language is the soul of a people. The preservation of language is directly tied to safeguarding history, cultural identity, knowledge systems, and future generations.”

The development has been widely welcomed, particularly in communities where the three languages are widely spoken.

The initiative is being championed through the Bureau of Ghana Languages, led by Bureau of Ghana Languages, which has been credited with coordinating experts and stakeholders in developing the standardised texts.

Among dignitaries present were Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central Hon. Mahama Ayariga, Transport Minister and MP for Saboba Hon. Joseph Nikpe, MP for Bimbila Dominic Nitiwul, and MP for Kpandai Hon. Matthew Nyindam.
