Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has reiterated his commitment to supporting the Black Stars, saying he is ready to fulfil — and potentially increase — his financial pledge to the national team.
Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, the Chief Executive of Engineers and Planners promised a $5 million boost to Ghana’s campaign at the tournament.
Following Ghana’s impressive opening run — a 1-0 victory over Panama and a goalless draw against England — Mahama visited the team’s camp in Rhode Island, where he said he had initially held back the funds pending encouraging performances.
“I’m truly impressed by your performances at the World Cup. I had held back the financial support I promised and even told the Minister [Kofi Adams] that I wouldn’t release the money until I saw strong performances from the team. But after what I’ve seen, I’m eager to rush home and not only fulfil my pledge but increase it as well,” he said.
Ghana, aiming to reach the Round of 32 for the first time since 2010, conclude their Group L fixtures against Croatia on Saturday, June 27, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The Black Stars have since relocated to Philadelphia from Rhode Island ahead of the decisive encounter.
