Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has dismissed claims that government officials and political figures were sponsored to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that no preferential treatment was given in the allocation of tickets.

His remarks come after the government’s free World Cup ticket support initiative officially ended.

The Ministry confirmed that the scheme was limited to covering the group stage of the tournament and will not continue into the knockout phase.

Speaking in an interview, the Buem MP stated that no Members of Parliament, Ministers, or CEOs received government-sponsored trips to the tournament.

“No Member of Parliament, Minister of State or CEO was sponsored by government to the World Cup. We did not give any slots to any constituencies,” Adams told Sporty FM.

He further addressed concerns among fans in the diaspora, many of whom believed the government would provide match tickets for Ghanaian supporters attending the games.

The Sports Minister apologised to diaspora fans who were unable to access free tickets to watch matches involving the Ghana national football team, expressing regret over the misunderstanding.

“I want to apologise to Ghanaian fans in the diaspora if they didn’t understand us well. They thought everybody who would walk to the stadium would get a ticket from us. We never said so,” he explained.

Adams maintained that the government’s ticket distribution process was transparent and not influenced by political or constituency-based considerations.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has released two official supporter ticket categories for Ghana’s Round of 32 clash against Colombia national football team at Kansas City Stadium.

According to the GFA, the Premier Supporter Tier is priced at $1,265, while the Standard Supporter Tier costs $1,100.

As discussions continue over ticket allocation and fan travel arrangements, the Minister’s comments are expected to add to ongoing conversations surrounding Ghana’s World Cup participation and future tournament planning.

The Ghana national football team are scheduled to face Colombia in their Round of 32 match at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, July 4, with kickoff set for 1:30 GMT.
