The people of Ada are preparing to celebrate one of Ghana’s most historic and culturally significant festivals as the 2026 Asafotufiami Festival takes place in early August, with the grand climax scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2026, in Big Ada.

Popularly known as the Divisional Firing of Musketry, the annual festival commemorates the courage, resilience and military achievements of the Ada people. It honours the bravery of their ancestors who defended their land during historic battles, including the Battle of Nonobe in 1750 and the Katamanso War of 1826.

As part of the celebrations, the various Asafo companies will parade through the town before firing volleys of muskets into the air as a symbolic tribute to the fallen warriors whose sacrifices helped preserve the freedom and identity of the Ada State.

The festival is also a colourful display of the rich traditions of the Dangme people. Visitors can expect spectacular durbars featuring chiefs dressed in elaborate regalia, traditional drumming, energetic cultural dances and a variety of performances that showcase the community’s heritage.

Every year, the festival brings together thousands of people, including members of the Ada diaspora who return home from different parts of Ghana and abroad to reconnect with family, celebrate their roots and strengthen community ties.

For the people of Ada, Asafotufiami is more than a cultural event, it is a celebration of identity, unity and the enduring legacy of their forefathers. It also serves as an opportunity to educate younger generations about the history, values and sacrifices that shaped the community.
