FIFA has defended the integrity of its World Cup referees following complaints from Egypt over officiating decisions in their Round of 16 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) called on FIFA to remove the match officials and investigate two controversial decisions made during the second half of the game.

Egypt argued that the decisions reflected “double standards” and influenced Argentina’s comeback victory after the defending champions overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3-2.

However, FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer, Pierluigi Collina, rejected claims of wrongdoing and backed the officials involved.

“Constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport,” Collina said.

He said FIFA match officials carry out their duties with professionalism, honesty and independence, warning that unsupported allegations could put referees and their families at risk.

“Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials,” he added.

The controversy followed Egypt’s elimination from the tournament after losing a two-goal lead against Argentina.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan had earlier criticised the officiating, claiming his team was treated unfairly during the match.

Collina maintained that FIFA has confidence in its refereeing team and insisted that match officials operate without external influence.
