Former Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections to inadequate engagement with its grassroots supporters.

Speaking at the University of Ghana’s Time With a Politician programme on Wednesday, July 8, Ms Osei-Opare said the party failed to maintain strong connections with its base and did not sufficiently involve committed members while in government.

Reflecting on the NPP’s loss after eight years in office, she said the magnitude of the defeat highlighted the need for stronger grassroots mobilisation and more effective communication with party supporters.

“We didn’t have enough time to engage the people we were working for. We didn’t engage the constituents enough to carry them along with us. The lack of space is something I believe contributed to our defeat because there wasn’t enough effort to carry the party’s grassroots and the communities that were served. We didn’t do enough grassroots communication,” she said.

Ms Osei-Opare said the party’s inability to effectively communicate with and involve its grassroots supporters weakened its relationship with voters and contributed to its electoral setback.

The NPP lost the 2024 general elections, bringing an end to its eight-year administration. The defeat has been linked to economic challenges, public dissatisfaction with governance, and declining enthusiasm among some sections of its support base.
