A charging mobile phone is suspected to have sparked a fire that damaged part of a four-bedroom self-contained house at Afie Ne Fie in Apam, narrowly preventing what could have been a major disaster.

The fire destroyed one of the rooms in the apartment, damaging a mobile phone, wooden bed, ceiling fan, electrical sockets, light bulb, parts of the ceiling, louvre blades and other personal belongings.

According to the occupant, Madam Gladys, she had left her mobile phone charging on a wooden bed before stepping outside to attend to family and friends. She returned later to find the room engulfed in flames.

The fire was, however, brought under control before it could spread to the remaining three rooms of the apartment, saving household utensils and other valuables.

No injuries or deaths were recorded in the incident.

Although the exact cause of the fire has not been officially determined, preliminary assessments suggest that the blaze may have started from the mobile phone that was left charging.

Authorities have since cautioned the public against unsafe charging practices, including leaving electronic devices unattended while connected to power sources.
