A Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region is under investigation over allegations that he rented out unauthorised structures to commercial sex workers at Asafo BB in Kumasi.

The officer, whose name was withheld in a police statement, is alleged to have owned some of the illegal structures located in the area.

The allegations came to light after a special taskforce from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) visited the enclave to demolish structures erected along the Subin Stream, behind the COCOBOD building in Adum.

The demolition exercise was, however, halted after some squatters allegedly attacked the taskforce, which comprised soldiers and city guards.

The squatters reportedly pelted the team with stones and used clubs to attack them, while also damaging two pickup trucks and an excavator deployed for the exercise. The windscreens of the vehicles were shattered and some tyres deflated.

The confrontation resulted in injuries to three members of the taskforce, including a soldier.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi, has hinted at a second phase of the demolition exercise, which he said would be carried out without prior notice.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has expressed concern over the allegations involving the officer and said it will communicate further developments as investigations progress.
