The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has granted bail to New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications strategist Dennis Miracles Aboagye in the sum of GHC50 million with three sureties, as investigations continue into alleged financial and procurement irregularities involving about GHC55 million.

Miracles, a senior aide to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was arrested after arriving at the Accra International Airport on Saturday (11 July), following what EOCO said was an earlier stop order issued against him.

Miracles’ lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, described the bail conditions as excessive and difficult to satisfy, arguing that they effectively prevent his client’s release.

Speaking outside EOCO headquarters, Atta Akyea said the bail requires three sureties, two of whom must justify their assets.

“How is he going to post the bail bond? GH¢50 million, three sureties, two to be justified. How can it be met? Where are you going to find properties worth GH¢50 million?” he asked.

The legal team said Miracles had not yet been able to satisfy the conditions.

EOCO said Miracles is being investigated over alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities during his tenure as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD).

The agency said the alleged offences involve approximately GH¢55 million.

Miracles was arrested alongside the Secretariat’s former accountant, Gerald Appiah, as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to EOCO, a stop order had been placed on Miracles about a week before his arrest, but he had already travelled outside the country before it could be executed.

The agency said officers of the Ghana Immigration Service intercepted him upon his return to Ghana and handed him over to investigators on Sunday.

EOCO added that Miracles subsequently accompanied investigators on a search operation connected to the investigation, with inquiries continuing.
