The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) is set to introduce a Diploma in Environmental Communication to equip journalists with specialised skills in reporting on climate change, green innovation and sustainable development.

The programme, which is targeted at interested members of the Eastern Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), was announced by the Vice-Chancellor of UESD, Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson, at the closing ceremony of a two-day media training workshop in Koforidua.

The training, held under the theme “Reporting Green Innovation: Strengthening Media Engagement for Sustainable Development,” was aimed at enhancing journalists’ understanding and coverage of environmental sustainability, climate resilience and inclusive development.

Professor Nyarko-Sampson said the diploma programme would be offered under the Nkabom Collaborative, through which UESD is implementing the Agro-Waste Management and Aquaculture Technology Entrepreneurship Initiative.

He encouraged journalists to take advantage of the opportunity when admissions open.

According to him, the media training formed part of efforts to prepare journalists to report on key milestones of the initiative, showcase success stories of beneficiaries and promote accurate, solutions-focused reporting on green innovation.

He stressed that consistent media coverage was critical to promoting climate-resilient livelihoods, sustainable agriculture and opportunities for women, young people and vulnerable groups.

The Nkabom Collaborative is a partnership involving UESD, Koforidua Technical University, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University of Ghana, the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ashesi University, the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and McGill University in Canada.

Through the collaboration, UESD is leading initiatives aimed at transforming agricultural waste into valuable products, promoting technology-driven aquaculture and creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities within Ghana’s sustainable agri-food sector.
