The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has advised all staff and students to defer travel to South Africa over safety concerns following recent demonstrations targeting foreigners.

In a general notice issued by KNUST Management in Kumasi, the university cited reports of protests in several parts of South Africa that have resulted in disruptions to public life and property, as well as incidents of violence.

“In line with the above, therefore, members of the University Community are advised to avoid travelling to South Africa, whether for official business or personal reasons, until further notice,” the notice said.

Accordingly, KNUST directed staff and students to defer any planned travel to South Africa. Responsible officers have also been instructed to suspend approval of all official travel to the country until further notice.

The university further advised members of the KNUST community currently in South Africa to “exercise extreme caution, avoid locations of demonstrations and large gatherings, monitor local media, comply with the guidance of local authorities and the Ghanaian diplomatic mission, and maintain regular contact with the appropriate officials of the university.”

The advisory comes amid growing concern in Ghana and across Africa about attacks and protests targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.
