Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has called on the football governing body to retain Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, insisting the Portuguese tactician needs time to rebuild the national team.

Queiroz was appointed Ghana’s head coach in March following the dismissal of Otto Addo, taking charge of the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended with elimination in the knockout stage, the 73-year-old guided the Black Stars to reach the knockout phase for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Following the exit, Queiroz sparked speculation about his future after a social media post was interpreted by some as a possible departure announcement. However, the former Real Madrid manager later clarified in an online interview that he had not resigned from his position.

With discussions ongoing over whether the Portuguese coach should continue, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe has backed his retention, arguing that continuity on the technical bench is crucial for Ghana’s rebuilding process.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, the Hearts of Oak board member suggested that Queiroz should initially be handed a short-term contract, with any extension dependent on his performance.

“I feel we should maintain him for a limited period,” he said, explaining that the coach should initially be offered a short-term contract, with any extension based on his performance.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes Queiroz’s role should go beyond preparing the Black Stars for immediate competitions, insisting he must be given the responsibility of developing a younger and more competitive squad for the future.

“He should be made to know that he is going to train the boys from the scratch and make them very formidable,” he stated.

The former GFA president also raised concerns about the physical condition of some players in the national team, suggesting that inadequate preparation and inconsistent training have contributed to some of Ghana’s recent challenges.

He urged the technical team to focus on improving players’ fitness levels while scouting and nurturing emerging talents who can become key figures for the Black Stars in the coming years.

According to Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, Ghana’s return to the top of African football will require patience, strategic planning and greater investment in youth development, including increased opportunities for locally based players.

He expressed optimism that with the right structures and support, the Black Stars can rebuild and compete strongly on the international stage again.

Following the conclusion of the World Cup campaign, Ghana will now shift focus to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where the Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia. The qualifiers are scheduled to begin in September.
