The Yendi Municipal Directorate of Education has announced the temporary closure of all public schools in the municipality until Friday following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II (Gariba II).

The directive is intended to allow pupils, teachers, and other staff to observe the traditional mourning period and enable the community to participate in activities associated with the funeral rites of the late King.

The decision comes as Yendi, the traditional capital of the Dagbon Kingdom, enters a period of solemn reflection after the official announcement of the King’s passing.

Schools are expected to remain closed throughout the mourning period, while educational authorities have urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children remain safe at home until classes officially resume. The closure affects only public basic and second-cycle schools under the Municipal Directorate.

The Education Directorate expressed its condolences to the Dagbon Traditional Council, the royal family, and the people of Dagbon, describing the late Yaa Naa as a revered traditional leader whose reign was marked by peace, unity, and development.

The Directorate noted that normal academic activities will resume on Friday, barring any further directives, and encouraged the public to cooperate with the arrangements put in place during the kingdom’s period of mourning.
