Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have appointed experienced South African tactician Eric Tinkler as the club’s new head coach with immediate effect.

The Ghana Premier League giants announced the appointment in a statement on Friday, describing Tinkler as a coach with an outstanding pedigree, vast top-flight experience, and a distinguished playing career that will bolster the club’s ambitions both domestically and in continental competitions.

The Portuguese-South African coach arrives in Kumasi with more than three decades of experience in elite football and holds a CAF A Licence.

A former captain of South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, Tinkler has managed some of the country’s biggest clubs, including Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits.

During his coaching career, he guided Orlando Pirates to a runners-up finish in the CAF Champions League and led SuperSport United to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup.

His list of achievements also includes domestic silverware such as MTN8 titles and the Telkom Knockout.

Before embarking on his coaching career, Tinkler enjoyed a successful spell as a player, earning 48 caps for South Africa and captaining the national team at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.

He also represented Bafana Bafana at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and was part of the squad that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations title.

At club level, he played professionally in England, Italy and Portugal, featuring for Barnsley FC, Cagliari and Vitória de Setúbal.

Kotoko said Tinkler’s reputation for tactical discipline, structured methodology and player development makes him an ideal fit for the club’s long-term vision. He will work closely with the club’s Director of Football, Stanley Menzo Purl, as the Porcupine Warriors seek to establish a sustainable structure capable of competing for honours in Ghana and across Africa.

Reacting to the appointment, Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee Chairman, James Osei Brown, expressed confidence that the former Bafana Bafana captain possesses the qualities needed to guide the club into a new era.

“Eric brings a wealth of experience, discipline, and winning pedigree to our technical bench. His track record of developing players and delivering results at the highest level in African football makes him the right man to lead our team at this important time. Tinkler also expressed his excitement after taking charge of one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.

I look forward to working with the players, staff and management to build a team that can compete and win, both at home and on the continental stage. The appointment signals Kotoko’s intent to strengthen their technical setup ahead of the new season as they target success in both the Ghana Premier League and continental competitions.

The club concluded its statement by welcoming Tinkler to Kumasi, with the board expressing confidence that his appointment marks the beginning of a successful chapter for the Porcupine Warriors.
