Ghana international Tariq Lamptey has opened up about the reasons behind his decision to join Queens Park Rangers, citing the club’s ambitious vision and coaching setup as key factors in his move.

The 26-year-old completed a switch to the English Championship side ahead of the 2026/27 season after leaving Serie A outfit Fiorentina, where his spell was cut short by an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Lamptey joined the Italian club from Brighton & Hove Albion on a three-year contract but was forced to leave following his lengthy injury layoff.

Speaking after sealing his move to Loftus Road, the right-back expressed his excitement about the new challenge.

“I’m excited for the opportunity ahead,” he said.

“When I spoke to the gaffer and Christian (Nourry), the project was an encouraging one.

“The team has ambitious goals for this season, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Despite attracting interest from several clubs, Lamptey said the opportunity to work under new QPR head coach Julien Stéphan played a significant role in his decision.

“He’s worked with some great players who’ve gone on to achieve great things in the game,” he said.

“His résumé speaks for itself. He’s a great coach, so I’m excited to work with him and learn from him.”

The Ghana defender is now focused on rebuilding his career after his injury layoff and believes he can return to the level that established him as one of the Premier League’s most exciting young full-backs during his time at Brighton.

“I know what I’m capable of, and I set myself high standards,” he said.

“I had a great start to my career, and I’ll keep building on that.”

Lamptey has earned 11 senior caps for Ghana and represented the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He will be hoping to make an immediate impact at QPR as the London club targets a strong Championship campaign this season.
