The government has announced that the Women’s Development Bank is expected to commence full operations before the end of the year.
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed this while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23.
According to him, significant progress has been made towards establishing the bank, following its formal incorporation as WDB GH LTD on January 26, 2026.
Dr Forson said the government has since applied to the Bank of Ghana for the necessary banking licence to enable the institution to begin operations.
He added that the Ministry of Finance has deposited GH¢400 million with the Bank of Ghana as the initial capital required to meet the licensing requirements for the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank.
“Mr. Speaker, the Government has made progress toward establishing the Women’s Development Bank. On January 26, 2026, the Bank was officially incorporated as WDB GH LTD. Following its incorporation, the Government applied to the Bank of Ghana for the necessary banking license to allow the Bank to begin operations.
“In order to meet the capital requirement for licensing, the Ministry of Finance has deposited GH¢400 million into an account with the Bank of Ghana as the initial capital for the Women’s Development Bank. The Bank is expected to commence full operations before the end of the year,” he told Parliament.
The Finance Minister said the establishment of the bank forms part of government’s efforts to provide targeted financial support to women entrepreneurs and businesses across the country.
He noted that the Women’s Development Bank is expected to improve access to finance and create opportunities for women-led enterprises to expand and contribute to economic growth.
Dr Forson assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the bank begins full operations before the close of 2026.
