We must move forward and build a new future for Black Stars — Djiku

Ghana defender Alexander Djiku has expressed disappointment over the Black Stars’ recent struggles on the international stage but believes the team must now focus on rebuilding for the future.

Djiku, who missed Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign through injury, said he was frustrated that the team failed to progress beyond the group stage, considering the country’s rich football history.

“You know, I feel very good because, also, you know, the Black Stars have four stars, we won a lot of African Cups, so it’s a strong country. When I saw Black Stars in the past, they always went to the final and semi-final. So I was a little bit angry that we cannot get past the group stage,” he said.

Ghana’s disappointing performance at the tournament has sparked calls for a long-term rebuilding plan and a new direction for the national team.

However, Djiku believes focusing too much on past disappointments will not help the Black Stars, insisting that the team must look ahead.

“I was there in the last two African Cups, but now it’s far. We have to move forward and see what we can do in the next World Cup,” he added.

The experienced centre-back is now eager to return to national team duty after recovering from the injury that ruled him out of Ghana’s World Cup squad.

Djiku is expected to be available for selection when the Black Stars begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this year, providing a timely boost to Ghana’s defence as the team seeks to secure qualification for the continental tournament.
