Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati has booked his place in the men’s semi-finals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a statement performance in his opening heat, underlining Ghana’s growing medal ambitions on the track.

The Ghanaian sprint star finished first in his men’s 100m with a blistering time of 10.00 seconds, which is the fastest 100m heat time ever recorded in Commonwealth Games history.

The impressive performance also marks the sprinter’s season’s best.

“I was away for like a month. I just got back to racing… so I think it’s fine to be able to come out here and race and equal my season best,” he said.

Azamati says he expects tougher competition in the next round but is focused on taking the race one step at a time.

“The real test is tomorrow, which has tougher competition… we come here to do our best tomorrow,” he added.

Fellow speedster Abdul-Rasheed Saminu also secured his place in the semi-final after finishing first with his season’s best of 10.01 seconds.

With the talented sprinters progressing through the competition and confidence continuing to grow within the camp, hopes are rising that Ghana can challenge for medals in both the individual and relay events.
