Veteran Kumawood actress Mavis Yeboah, popularly known as Maame Gyanwaa, has revealed that she has completely lost sight in one eye and spends about GH¢6,000 every month to preserve the vision in her remaining eye.

The actress made the disclosure during an appearance on Cook with Empress Gifty, which aired on Sunday, July 26, 2026, where she recounted her long struggle with an eye condition that began after she sought treatment for malaria.

According to Maame Gyanwaa, she experienced severe chills and visited a hospital where medical tests confirmed she had malaria.

She said she was prescribed three injections but noticed a sudden change in her vision after receiving the final dose.

“The nurse said I would receive three injections, but after the third one, my vision suddenly became dim. I told her what was happening, but she assured me I would be fine. When I got home and tried watching television, I realised I could no longer see clearly,” she said.

The actress said she later visited an eye clinic, where doctors diagnosed her with pressure in her eyes and prescribed medication.

However, she claimed her condition worsened after undergoing treatment, forcing her to seek medical attention from different facilities.

She said she was referred from Emmanuel Eye Clinic to St. Thomas Eye Hospital but could not continue treatment there because of the cost involved.

Maame Gyanwaa added that she later visited the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital but could not immediately access specialist care because the doctors were away on training.

She subsequently travelled to Agogo seeking treatment but was referred to the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after doctors indicated that the required specialist care was unavailable.

At Okomfo Anokye, she said doctors informed her that one eye had already suffered severe damage and that medical efforts would focus on preserving the vision in her remaining eye.

“The doctors told me they had to save my remaining eye because the other had been severely damaged. I have completely lost sight in one eye and now rely on the other, but even that isn’t as strong as it used to be,” she said.

The actress disclosed that her current medication costs GH¢5,105, while each treatment session requires an additional GH¢550, excluding transportation costs.

She said the expenses have pushed her monthly healthcare costs to approximately GH¢6,000 as she continues efforts to protect her remaining vision.

Maame Gyanwaa, known for her roles in Ghana’s Kumawood movie industry, did not disclose the specific medical diagnosis but appealed for continued support as she manages her condition.
