For many creatives, recognition comes after years of passion, consistency and dedication. For Augustine Afortor, popularly known as Augustine De Director, that moment has arrived once again as he earns a nomination for Comic Director of the Year at the 2026 Ghana Comedy Awards.

The nomination marks another milestone in the career of a creative mind who has dedicated himself to transforming ideas into entertaining, laughter-filled experiences on screen.

Beyond the recognition, Augustine sees the nomination as a reflection of years of learning, experimentation, collaboration and commitment to advancing comedy storytelling in Ghana and beyond.

According to him, the achievement is not tied to one specific production but represents the impact of his overall body of work.

“I can’t tell which particular projects or productions got me nominated because only the organisers of Ghana Comedy Awards can tell which criteria they used,” Augustine said.

“But with certainty, I can say I’m doing well for myself, for the creatives I work with, and for the industry.”

Over the years, Augustine Afortor has built an impressive portfolio through collaborations with some of the biggest names in Ghanaian and Nigerian comedy.

His creative direction has contributed to projects featuring comedians and content creators including Jeffery Nortey, Bismarck The Joke, Nasty Blaq, Sirbalo, Made In Ghana, Lekzy De Comic, MJ The Comedian and MC Okokobioko, among others.

The latest nomination adds to previous recognition of his creative work. In 2022, Augustine was nominated for Film Director of the Year at the Hall of Eminence Awards, highlighting his growing influence in filmmaking and entertainment.

His journey into comedy directing began with a desire to bring humorous ideas to life and create moments that connect with audiences. Through producing comedy skits, he has continued to refine his craft, guided by his personal mantra: “Cook the joke, invite others to a LAUGH SUPPER.”

Augustine draws inspiration from everyday life, particularly the natural reactions of children, which he describes as “simple truth.” He also finds creative ideas in the amusing behaviours of animals while studying the works of renowned humorists and stand-up comedians around the world.

Speaking about Ghanaian comedy, he believes its strength lies in the country’s cultural diversity, with different languages, accents, traditions and lifestyles providing endless opportunities for relatable storytelling.

He explained that comedy resonates most when audiences see their own experiences reflected through humour.

Looking ahead, Augustine remains optimistic about the future of Ghana’s comedy industry, pointing to the growth of social media, digital content creation and platforms such as the Ghana Comedy Awards as signs of increased recognition for creatives.

As he competes for Comic Director of the Year at the 2026 Ghana Comedy Awards, Augustine Afortor’s nomination represents not only a personal achievement but also a celebration of a creative force whose vision continues to shape Ghanaian comedy—one laugh, one story and one production at a time.
