Jannik Sinner was expected to begin his North American hard-court swing at the Cincinnati Open. The Italian has now been forced to withdraw from the Masters 1000 event due to a right knee injury. Sinner released a statement explaining the reason for his withdrawal.

"After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. My right knee has been bothering me, and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet,” Sinner said.

The 24-year-old further explained, "I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob (Moran) and his whole team a great and successful event. I can’t wait to be back next year, and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open."

Currently, the Italian player holds a 12-4 record in Cincinnati but will now lose 650 ATP ranking points following his withdrawal. 

Earlier this year, Sinner bagged the first five ATP Masters 1000 titles (Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and Rome), where he joined Novak Djokovic as just the second player in history to complete the Career Golden Masters.

Sinner’s withdrawalfollows Carlos Alcaraz’s, who is continuing to recover from a wrist injury. So, this year both of the 2025 Cincinnati Open finalists will not be playing the tournament. Last year, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the final after the Italian retired toward the end of the first set.

Without Sinner and Alcaraz, the highest-seeded player in the men's draw will be No. 2 Alexander Zverev, followed by world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime.
