Telecom giant MTN Ghana is training more than 300 drivers nationwide on newly introduced road traffic regulations as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce preventable crashes, the telecommunications company said.

The training programme, the second organised by MTN Ghana for its drivers, forms part of the company’s occupational health and safety measures and covers drivers across its operations.

Drivers in the company’s Northern Business District were the first beneficiaries of the latest session, held at MTN Ghana’s Nhyiaeso office in Kumasi on Monday (10 August).

The programme was supported by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and representatives from the insurance sector.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director in charge of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service said sustained driver education was necessary to address the growing incidence of preventable road crashes.

He said regular engagement with professional drivers would help them understand changes in traffic regulations and apply them correctly while performing their duties.

“This partnership with MTN Ghana is timely. Building the capacity of their drivers and staff is essential so that when they are on the road, they will be seen to be safer in the way they handle vehicles,” Obeng told journalists.

The drivers were trained in defensive driving, hazard identification, risk assessment and safe driving in different road and weather conditions.

They were also taken through routine vehicle inspection and maintenance, speed-limit compliance, proper seat-belt use and the avoidance of distractions while driving.

Facilitators explained provisions of the new road traffic regulations and urged drivers to familiarise themselves with their responsibilities when operating corporate vehicles.

MTN Ghana said road safety training was compulsory for new employees whose duties involved driving, while existing drivers received refresher training to update their knowledge and reinforce safe practices.

The Acting Director of the Inspectorate Division of the DVLA, Kwasi Bonah Otuo Serebour, commended MTN Ghana for prioritising driver safety.

He said Ghana needed to move from a largely reactive approach to road safety towards preventive measures that identify and address risks before crashes occur.

Serebour urged organisations operating vehicle fleets to provide regular refresher training, monitor driver conduct and ensure that vehicles were properly inspected and maintained.

He described road safety as a shared responsibility requiring stronger cooperation among regulators, businesses, professional drivers and other road users.

MTN Ghana said the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen safety standards, improve driver awareness and promote responsible road use across its operations.
