The final quarterfinal matchup at the Canadian Open in Toronto goes down tonight, as 11th seed Naomi Osaka faces 2nd seed Elena Rybakina. This match marks the first time these two Grand Slam champions will face each other in their careers.

Osaka has had quite a smooth path to the quarterfinals. She first recorded a one-sided 6-2, 6-4 victory over Panna Udvardy and then delivered an even better performance against Elise Mertens in the second round by racking up a 6-1, 6-2 win. The Japanese player continued her fine run of form as she defeated home favorite Leylah Fernandez in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 and cruised to the elite eight.

The 28-year-old has now won 13 of her last 15 completed matches, and she is yet to drop a set at this year’s event, joining Coco Gauff (before the quarter-finals).

Despite being the 11th seed, Osaka has looked more composed in the tournament so far. Rybakina, meanwhile, has shown some vulnerability and has yet to rediscover her peak form.

The Belarusian had a tough outing against Daria Kasatkina in the first round (6-3, 5-7, 6-4). She followed that up with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Ann Li before being involved in another close contest against Liudmila Samsonova (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). 

Does Elena Rybakina Have a Chance To Become the World No. 1?

Rybakina has a small chance of becoming the World No.1 for the first time in her career at the Canadian Open. Current World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka holds 8,670 ranking points following her round-of-16 exit, while World No. 2 Rybakina can pull within just four points at 8,666 points if she wins the title. 

Speaking at a conference after defeating Samsonova, Rybakina expressed how she remains reluctant to make the ranking the focus of her Toronto campaign and believes there are elements of her game that need improvement.

“I try not to think about it because still a lot of matches I gotta win, and I was not playing that well grass-court season as I wanted, so for me the most important now is to see the improvement. We worked hard the last couple of weeks coming here to this US swing… But still it's not my best, so I try not to think about the ranking, about the points and just go match at the time and see how far I can get,” added Rybakina. 

Rybakina is the highest seed left in the draw and is now the only player to reach the round of 16 at each of the seven WTA 1000 competitions this season. Her best result at the Canadian Open is a semifinal finish, which she achieved in both 2023 and 2025.

Speaking at the post-match interview after her victory over Leylah Fernandez, Osaka was asked about her upcoming maiden clash against Rybakina. The four-time Grand Slam singles champion said she is well aware that it can be quite a tough match.

"I think we're going to see a high-level tennis match. She's an incredible player. She won the Australian Open this year. I'm really looking forward to playing her because we've never met. It will be a good experience for me," said Osaka
