The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has called for increased development of technical skills to support Ghana’s move towards renewable energy.

Director for Renewables and Green Transition at the ministry, Ing. Seth Mahu, said the country needed a critical mass of skilled workers to deliver its renewable energy ambitions.

He made the call at a technical committee workshop in Accra under the Sustainable Energy for Climate Protection II (SE4C II) project.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Energy Commission, the Commission for TVET, the Ghana TVET Service and 12 TVET institutions implementing a competency-based solar technology training programme.

Speaking on behalf of the Energy and Green Transition Minister, Ing. Mahu urged TVET institutions and other stakeholders to play their part in developing the skills needed for Ghana’s energy transition.

The workshop focused on reviewing progress in solar technician training and identifying ways to improve its implementation across participating institutions.

Principals and course coordinators also developed institutional roadmaps to strengthen the delivery of solar technology training.

Participants further discussed the development of a training module on net metering to equip students with additional skills needed to support renewable energy adoption.

The module is expected to go beyond meter installation and provide students with knowledge relevant to Ghana’s broader transition towards renewable energy.

The SE4C II project is supported by Germany and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

It is being implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to strengthen Ghana’s TVET system and prepare students for opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
